Formatting your Extended Essay

Each Extended Essay must be formally presented. This includes the layout, organization, appearance and formal elements of the essay. Specifically title page, table of contents, page numbers, illustrative material, quotations, documentation/citations, and apendices (if used). Below are samples in different fields to help you correctly format your EE.

You have done many research projects in different classes, subject areas, etc. over your time as a student. What is your research process? Is it different depending on your topic or subject?Do you generally follow the same structure and process regardless of the topic or research question?

Starting with a research question is a standard part of a research process. The graphic to the right is a general process we hope students follow.

ACTIVITY: Create your own graphic of the research process you plan to follow for your Extended Essay. Think about the process YOU typically follow and add anything that might be subject-specific (check the research terminology below.)

A Good Research Question

Questions need to be subject appropriate and show analysis. No Extended Essay should merely summarize sources. Below is an activity from a training session on good questions - there are also samples in the subject guide for your area. See the "Extended Essay Subjects and Topics" file above.

Curriculum: Core - Extended Essay - CLASS OF 2017

For students in the graduating class of 2018 and beyond, the Extended Essay criteria and requirements will change and this website will be updated accordingly with appropriate information. The following information is valid for students in the class of 2017 and prior years.

The extended essay of some 4,000 words offers the opportunity for IB students to investigate a topic of special interest, usually one of the student's six DP subjects, and acquaints them with the independent research and writing skills expected at university. It is intended to promote high-level research and writing skills, intellectual discovery and creativity - resulting in approximately 40 hours of work. It provides students with an opportunity to engage in personal research on a topic of their choice, under the guidance of a supervisor. This leads to a major piece of formally presented, structured writing of no more that 4,000 words, in which ideas and findings are communicated in a reasoned and coherent manner, appropriate to the subject. It is recommended that students follow the completion of the written essay with a short, concluding interview - viva voce - with the supervisor. In countries where normally interviews are required prior to acceptance for employment or for a place at university, the extended essay had proved to be a valuable stimulus for discussion.

From the IB website, www.ibo.org

For example, students choosing history must be interested in working with primary sources.  Those selecting a science topic are strongly advised to undertake experimentally based investigations, rather than library-based surveys.  For an Extended Essay in language A, students should be interested in the independent critical analysis of literary works.  Emphasis is placed on the communication of ideas and information in a logical and coherent manner, and the overall presentation of the essay.  Extended Essays are assessed according to both general and subject-specific criteria.
